March Meeting!

Due to the harmful impact of plastic on global ecosystems, economies, and public health, immediate action must be taken to eliminate single-use, throwaway plastics. Change must be established in consumer lifestyles through education, citizen action, and business accountability.

Our speaker, Dix Henneke, is with Earth Resource Foundation (ERF), an Orange County based environmental educational non-profit whose mission it is to empower businesses and the general public with the knowledge and resources needed to make environmentally sustainable choices and changes. In 2004, ERF launched the Campaign against the Plastic Plague, in partnership with other environmental organizations to thwart the negative impacts of plastic.

With an informative and enlightening PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Henneke will discuss the downsides of single-use plastic, outline actions being taken, and show you how you can help make the changes that are needed.

February General Meeting!

Our February speaker was Shirley Grindle who explained how the Board of Supervisors here in Orange County set up a stacked-deck committee to re-write the TINCUP Ordinance. She gave a comprehensive background of the members of this committee, who appointed them, and what the majority of these committee members are attempting to do.

Shirley also explained what she is doing about their effort to create loopholes in the TINCUP Ordinance that would allow the Board of Supervisors and other candidates running for County office to evade the contribution limits.

Dr. Don McCanne Discusses the Prognosis of Healthcare Legislation

We were fortunate to have Dr. Don McCanne, a highly acknowledged expert on healthcare, as our speaker recently.

Dr. McCanne is well known in South Orange County having practiced as a family physician for over thirty years in San Clemente. He has served as chief of staff of his community hospital and as board president of his community bank. Now retired, he devotes his energy and leadership to health care reform activism, speaking and writing extensively on universal health care and on other policies for expanding health care coverage, access and affordability.

Dr. McCanne is currently the Senior Health Policy Fellow for the Physicians for a National Health Program. In this capacity he writes a daily health policy update which appears on the PNHP website.
